At Voyage Learning Campus, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our wider safeguarding responsibilities, we are committed to protecting children and young people from radicalisation and extremism.
Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, schools have a legal duty to have "due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism". This is known as the Prevent Duty.
The Prevent Duty is about safeguarding children and vulnerable individuals in the same way that schools work to protect them from other risks such as exploitation, abuse, gang involvement or online harm. It is not about spying on students or limiting discussion and debate. We encourage pupils to think critically, challenge extremist ideas safely, and develop resilience, respect and tolerance for others.
Staff receive safeguarding and Prevent training so they can recognise concerns, offer support and take appropriate action where necessary. We also work closely with safeguarding partners and external agencies where concerns arise.
Parents and carers can find further information, advice and support through the following resources:
- ACT Early — guidance on recognising concerns, accessing support and understanding radicalisation.
- Safer Stronger North Somerset – Prevent — local Prevent information, advice and contact details for reporting concerns or extremist content online.
If you are worried that someone may be at risk of radicalisation or exploitation, please contact the school safeguarding team or seek advice using the links above.
